*Special* California Day Three and Four

Tuesday…

As reluctant as we were to leave Santa Barbara and the lovely Motel, we decided to head off camping and went straight to a Walmart to pick up a tent and some sleeping bags. Gareth then set up the GoPro camera, and we headed off on the road…

After an hour or so, we stopped for gas and coffee at a little town called Santa Maria, checked our route, and decided to head down Route 1 – the Pacific Highway. I am so glad we did. I think I took about a hundred photos trying to capture the beauty of the Californian landscape – the huge mountains and hills, the vineyards and trees…

Another beautiful landscape!

Once we got to the coast, it took our breath away. The roads became windy cliff edge  roads, and every few miles there were Vista Stopping Points which we took full advantage of and stopped to take millions of photos.

The coast along here is very dramatic, and teamed with the gorgeous sunshine, and the fact that we were higher than the clouds at some points made for some magical views.

We had planned our route to Pfeiffer State Park, which has a fantastic waterfall on one of it’s trails, and after several stops along the way to look at the views and have a wander along the beach, we arrived at the park. Along the way, we stopped for fuel and came across what seems to be the smallest Yacht Club…

We had the option of camping or hiring a cabin, and we decided to go with the camp-site. After driving round the site and picking our ideal spot (number 42… The answer to life, the universe and everything…) we set up the tent, a remarkably easy job, and popped down to the store for some supplies.

We lit a fire in the fire pit, opened a bottle of Californian Red, and cooked Corn Beef Hash on the camp stove – absolute bliss.

Gareth set about taking some photos of the stars – although it didn’t quite work, whilst I tried to remember what we were supposed to do if a bear came along – play dead or try and act big? (For reference, Grizzly Bears – play dead; Brown Bears – back away, and let them pass, if they go to attack, make yourself look as big as possible and act ferocious).

Wednesday…

Wednesday, we got up early, after a peaceful night with no bears and drove out to the general stores, a few miles away, and bought breakfast. We then headed back to the camp site, and spent a lovely relaxed day chilling out, reading books, taking photos, cooking camp food on the stove, and chasing gophers and blue jays away from the food…

It was lovely after a week and a half of running around in the city or driving around California, to have a day of doing nothing! The park is beautiful, Redwood and Maple trees, huge hills in the background, and it was lovely and hot in the sunshine…

Gareth set up the camera to take some time lapse photos of the camp, watching the shadows move across the camp, and then after some food and a few more glasses of red, he set up the camera in the dark again, to try and capture his elusive star-trail photo.

Yay! He got it - star trails!

The stars were amazing that night, the sky was really clear and there was no light pollution… we managed to get some fantastic photos, as soon as we turned the lghts off our eyes adjusted to the dark and we could see thousands of stars.

We spent hours messing around with the camera and playing with the fire pit until we finally retired to our luxury 5* tent…
