Skulls and Rubys – Website and Online Store

Following on from the branding and packaging work, myself and Niki also have been working on the Skulls and Rubys online store and website. After much work and development, it was launched on Monday 18th February – www.skullsandrubys.co.uk. Before the website was launched we had a holding page in place to build some anticipation and excitement…

And as soon it we were able to launch, the home page went live…

We used the pink leopard print that we used for the tissue paper packaging as a background and kept the colour scheme of pink and black for the backgrounds and text on the site. I wanted to try and use the Lobster and Sailor Larry fonts throughout, but they were not easy to read in paragraphs, so I used a font called Aaargh for the large amounts of text where needed.

The website header used the Sailor Larry font and the sugar skull:

The very talented Amy Stanford took some fantastic photos for the website and marketing work, with the nails on both Niki and another model. The photos are absolutely awesome – and we have used one or two on the Facebook and Home page already…

I tried to keep consistency throughout the site, with rounded corners on backgrounds and images, black backgrounds and pink or white text, the three typefaces used throughout, and the pink leopard print background.

The products themselves we decided to portray as illustrations. We discussed using photos but as people’s hands look very different, and each set of nails is hand made and hand painted, we decided illustrations would be the best way to go, as we could show the designs off as accurately as possible without the hands themselves becoming a distraction. I found some brilliant hand illustrations from istock which worked perfectly, which I bought and then made into templates which I then designed the nail sets on based from Niki’s photos.

This is the default pose for hands to show off the nails, as you can clearly see all the nails. Each design has an illustration in this pose (the mix and match ones with different designs on each nail have two – a left and a right). We also used a plain flat hand to show some of the nail designs to – as this clearly shows all the nails on the hand as well.

As well as these illustrations we wanted something a bit more exciting and to fit in with the feel and attitude of the site, and the tattoo rock style… so we also did a clenched fist, a peace sign and a rock sign – all downloaded from istock and drawn by tc397, with the new nail designs illustrated using Illustrator and Photoshop by myself…

These have worked really well on the website in the category and product pages – showing the nail designs:

The website is now up and running, with the ability to buy all the different nail designs in various different sizes and shapes. We have used Shopify as the e-commerce solution, which I think works very well for the small business set up that Skulls and Rubys has. We have linked the site to a Facebook page, and Niki’s Instagram site with photos of her new nails, and we have plans to send out a newsletter 1-2 times a quarter with new nails and ranges, discount codes and other news from the business for the customers.
