Devon Young Carers

Devon Carers, the organisation I work with regularly have been working on a new campaign to encourage carers to have a Health and Wellbeing Check. It’s been ongoing with the Carers for a while, but the Young Carers wanted to roll out a slightly different version with their own branding…

I changed the typefaces and colours to match the DYC branding, and also made the layout a little better for younger people to read and use. The imagery on the front and back was also changed to reflect the audience a little better, and to make the whole thing a bit more positive and friendly for the younger audience.

Devon Carers Newsletters

I’ve just finished the latest Devon Carer Newsletters for this quarter. The issue has 3 editions, a Northern, Southern and Eastern version. The newsletter contains mainly county-wide news and articles, with the middle 2 pages for local news and articles, and the last page as a calendar for local events and groups.

Age England Conference Flyer

I’ve just finished the Age England Annual Conference Flyer for this year:

I have worked with Age England before, and this is a nice little job – using their existing graphics and branding and setting all the type. I love the little people and the colours, and this is always an enjoyable piece to do, setting the type in the best way I can, and playing around with the layout.

Flavel Comedy Festival 2014

For the past few years, I have worked with the Flavel Theatre in Dartmouth on their marketing material for the annual comedy festival. This year, we created a slightly larger leaflet, to give each act a page of it’s own, as well as the posters and newer updated logo.

I kept the logo the same as before, updated with the numbers and dates… I then used the branding and the information and pictures supplied from each act to design the leaflet, with a page for each act.

Finally I used the pink and yellow boxes, the typewriter typeface and the imagery to design the posters:

Using the branding, the colours, the logo, the blocks of text and the typewriter typeface, I managed to maintain consistency throughout the marketing, despite having different styles of imagery for each act, and whilst making sure each listing and poster for each act does not look the same.

Devon Carers Advertising

A few weeks ago I finished up some advertising work for Devon Carers. They asked me to work on a campaign to highlight their “Health and Wellbeing Checks” that are being offered for free to all carers. A lot of people don’t realise they are carers – so part of the campaign was to help people identify that they are carers.

We used stock photography of different ages and types of people to show that carers aren’t just older people. I used the existing branding to keep it consistent with the Devon Carers brand and I designed a basic ice which could be adapted to different size and shape adverts and posters:

The adverts were used in different local newspapers, magazines and other literature, and posters and flyers were printed and sent all over the county.

Met Office Information Design

For the first 3 months of the year, I worked at the Met Office in Exeter. It was a 3 month contract with them to work with the Design Studio there, and it was great fun! The Met Office is a great place to work, it’s a big building with a restaurant, cafe, gym, shop, a little community all within, and the people there were lovely. I really enjoyed it, and loved the work I did – which ranged from development work on the websites and apps, to information design like the examples below.

Here are a few examples of some of the work I did whilst I was part of the design team:

These were great fun to work on – we have basic colours and a style to stick to but other than that I was able to be as creative as I wanted. These have appeared on Facebook, twitter, google plus or have been sent round to advertisers and sponsors.

Updated Branding & Portfolio

As you know I spent the first 3 months of this year working at the Met Office, and used this as a good time to make some changes in my own office and with the business. Since coming back to my freelance work full time, I have been surprisingly busy, so this all took a little longer then planned!

The office has had a makeover, which I’ll blog about soon (it’s not quite finished yet!), which helped me to clear out and throw away some junk, rediscover old unfinished projects and generally clear my mind. The biggest change I made in the office was going from yellow walls to off white walls – changing the lighting in here and making me see everything ever so slightly differently… the office is cleaner, simpler and whiter.

So, I have applied this to my branding, making everything cleaner, simpler and whiter…

Old logo on the left, new logo on the right

I’ve also made the red a bit darker. Much better 🙂 I then applied these changes to the website, tweaking the design while I was at it. I use the Behance Portfolio, and Prosite, which makes it easier to update, change and mess around with the design. Once I was happy with this, I then applied the new branding to the Facebook page, Twitter page and this blog of course!

New Met Office work

New Met Office work

I’ve added in some new work, updated a few old projects and generally spruced everything up a little bit – I’ll be blogging about the new work over the next few weeks – it’s been a busy year so far!

So, now I am home and working freelance full time again, I plan to blog more, as well as the new work and the photos of the office (once I finally finish it…!) I want to blog more about my inspiration. I used to do a weekly round-up and I plan to start this up again. I am currently posting on the Facebook page every morning one thing that has caught my eye and inspired me or got me interested, and I am planning to blog about some of these things once a week – probably on a Friday, but we’ll see how I get on! I am still writing my book reviews, which you can find here: https://laurapakora82.wordpress.com, and whenever the book is art and design based, it gets re-blogged here as well.

Finally, I have a few new ideas and projects underway that I’ll be posting about soon – keep your eyes peeled and watch this space!

New Devon Young Carers Newsletter

Hot on the heels of the main 3 edition Devon Carers Newsletter, is the Devon Young Carers newsletter.

This edition is a countywide one, with news specifically for Devon Young Carers. The local offices also produce their own 4 page newsletter with local information and events in small numbers, but this county-wide edition is printed and sent to around 2000 young carers in Devon.

Devon Young Carers Newsletter Summer 2013

Devon Young Carers Newsletter Summer 2013

The design is based on the Devon Carers Newsletter, although there is an extra colour used as there are 4 different areas for the Young Carers. Coolvetica is used as the headline typeface as it appears younger than the Devon Carers typeface –  Myriad Pro.

You can find out more about Devon Young Carers here, and see more of my work with Devon Carers here on my website.
