The National Funeral Exhibition

I spent a few hours on Friday wandering around the Funeral Exhibition at Stoneleigh Park. Daisy Coffins, one of the businesses I work for, asked me to come up and have a look round – see the competition, have a look at the trends and new ideas in the funeral industry, and generally get a better idea of who they are advertising too.

As the manufacturers of biodegradable wicker coffins, the first thing I wanted to have a look at was the other wicker coffin companies. Most were fairly similar in branding and tone of voice, although I do think that the Daisy Coffins are the best looking coffins. They also have a lot more emphasis on the structure, and the quality build of Daisy Coffins, compared to most of the other companies.

I then wanted to look at the different urn companies, and their marketing and literature, how they sell to both Funeral Directors and to the public. Most of the companies seem to sell to both, and there were a lot of biodegradable urns on the market – something that is becoming much more of a concern for people know then it was in the past.

Finally, I wandered around to look at some of the other things that I found interesting, the make-up, the amazing stone carver who made the most beautiful stone memorials and headstones, the coffins with Comic Sans carved on the side, flowers, amazing hearses…

All in all a very interesting day.

New Devon Young Carers Newsletter

Hot on the heels of the main 3 edition Devon Carers Newsletter, is the Devon Young Carers newsletter.

This edition is a countywide one, with news specifically for Devon Young Carers. The local offices also produce their own 4 page newsletter with local information and events in small numbers, but this county-wide edition is printed and sent to around 2000 young carers in Devon.

The design is based on the Devon Carers Newsletter, although there is an extra colour used as there are 4 different areas for the Young Carers. Coolvetica is used as the headline typeface as it appears younger than the Devon Carers typeface –  Myriad Pro.

You can find out more about Devon Young Carers here, and see more of my work with Devon Carers here on my website.

Torbay Week 2013 Website

I have been working hard these last few months on the Torbay Week 2013 website. The previous website had been built and added to over the last few years and needed an update and refresh. So we took the existing branding and started anew…

Torbay Week Logo

I took the four shades of blue and used them as my colour palette. I used Helvetica Neue along with Pragmatica-Web for the text. I asked sailors and visitors what information they wanted and needed, and planned the website accordingly. The top menu navigation is on every page and has a link to all the pages, ensuring that each page is only a click away.

I ensured that there were social network links on all pages, either the left hand side bar, or big buttons in the actual content of the page. Every page has the sponsor logos and links, and the burgees for all four of the organising clubs:

Entire Home Page

I made sure the text was big and easy to read, using a dark blue to match the branding, instead of black type on a white background , which can be too harsh to read extensively on a screen. The links are all in pale blue to help differentiate them from the rest of the text.

Race Document Page

It is the 200th year anniversary of the first Sailing Match in the bay, so we added a feature of a history timeline, with pop up boxes of information, and links to PDF’s of old programmes and posters:

There is also a Supporters Wall, for the supporters of the event…

I had access to all the photography from Jean Border (Borderphotos2010.com) to use on the website, and I used a big shot of the keelboat fleet approaching the windward mark as the background of the site, with a blue tint. The headers are set to cycle through different shots, which I tried to vary between different types of boats, close-ups and landscapes, and the social after-sailing bar parties…

New Devon Carers Voice Website and Branding

A sub brand of Devon Carers – Devon Carers Voice helps carers have their say.

The branding needed to be similar to Devon Carers to tie in with the brand, but also different enough to look like a separate group. I worked with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design, who designed the logo, and from there we worked on the branding and ideas for the website.
The logo is designed to look like the RSS feed symbol, and like radio waves or sound waves, to emphasise the importance of communication within the organisation. We wanted something very simple that would fit with the existing Devon Carers branding, and that would work well with the existing colours.

We used the same colours from the Devon Carers branding as the main colour – Green for Devon (to tie into the Devon County Council branding – one of the partnerships), Red for Carers (as a homage to Carers UK), and then the blue for Voice (to tie in with the NHS branding – another of the partnerships), along with the logo, and used the same typefaces on the website – Bradley Hand for Devon, and Century Gothic for the other words. The typefaces used convey the friendly aspect of the brand, and help it seem approachable.

We also used a similar structure and design, to tie in to the Devon Carers branding.  The website was built on Squarespace, to enable staff to access the site and change/add content from the admin side easily. The navigation menu on the left hand side is a similar layout to the Devon Carers site, and has links back to this as well, to ensure ease of use for the carers.

New Project – Impulsive Racing Logo

A few months ago, I said goodbye to Mischief – the yacht I have been sailing on for nearly 9 years…

The owner had decided to sell, and that 5 of us would buy a racing yacht together to race more competitively and share the costs, and in August, the deal was done and Mischief sailed off into the sunset… round the corner to Plymouth.

We then started looking seriously for a new yacht, at quarter tonners and Impalas in particular as this model would provide us with some good competition where we are (there are 4 Impalas in Brixham, and several in Plymouth, and a few other boats that are similar.) We found out that Impulsive (a local boat with a lot of history)was sort-of up for sale – the owner was up for selling us 1/6th of the boat each, so that there would be 6 owners, and whilst I was on holiday, through several phone calls and text messages, we bought the boat!

Impulsive - the pale blue hull in the foreground

Impulsive – the pale blue hull in the foreground

We are sailing Impulsive a little more seriously than Mischief, we have some new sails, and the yacht itself is more competitive, so we got together to design a new logo for some new crew gear. There are many superstitions around sailing and the sea, no green on the boat, if you change the name of the boat, you change the luck, and it’s bad luck to wear gear with a different name on, so I got on it and designed a new logo for Impulsive (which we think is quite an appropriate name really!) ready for embroidery.

We stuck to a similar design to Mischief, as this is an evolution of the team, rather than something completely different, and used the “smurf” blue as the hull of the boat is this colour (and sadly this is our nickname…)

The Impulsive logo

The Impulsive logo

We sent the logo off to Crabstitch to be embroidered, where we came across a small problem – when stitched, the line round the edge was too big and looked too much, so Paul at Crabstitch did us an example with no border, which looked much better. We had new blue and white t-shirts printed:

T-shirt embroidery

And we also had some badges printed that we could stitch over the top of our existing gear, to change the name:

So far we seem to be doing well, we had some good results in the local regattas, and a few 1sts and 2nds here and there too! Thanks to Paul at Crabstitch for the embroidery too!

New Project – Crabstitch Logo

I designed this logo a while ago for a friend’s new business – he wanted something easy to embroider that represented the name of the business: Crabstitch.

Crabstitch is a local embroidery business, who specialise in clothing – they can digitise, embroider or screen print your design. Based in Torpoint, they cover Devon and Cornwall, small orders and large. They needed a logo that was friendly but professional.

I worked on various different ideas based around the same theme, and we finally decided on this little fellow:

New Blog… (sort of)

I’ve been toying with the idea of changing my blog, using typekit and playing with the CSS, to get the blog nearer to my current branding.

I never really got round to it. There are loads of other things I have been busy with, and then recently I decided to update my website, and tidy up the brand a little bit, so I have been waiting until that got underway. Today I had a good play with both Typekit and the CSS on my WordPress blog and as you can see, things are a little different.

I have changed the colours of links and hovers to match my brand colour (the same as the logo), and changed the typefaces to News Gothic and Minion Pro. I am testing these for a while, whilst I put the finishing touches to the new website (it’ll hopefully be uploaded in the next few weeks). I’ll use these typefaces (or if I change them, the new typefaces) on the new website.

I really like News Gothic, and I think it works well with Minion. I’ll play around with the website design, and see how it looks on there too, before I make a final decision, but after spending a big chunk of this afternoon on the Typekit site, I think I have made the right choice!

I’d love to know what you think, whether this is working, and whether you like my branding. I am keen to update it rather than change it completely, but if there is some overwhelming hatred for it, then maybe I’ll have a bit of a rethink…

Let me know what you think, and keep your eyes peeled for the new website, hopefully coming soon!
