Goodbye 2012 and hello 2013…

Well it’s been quite a year! A few new projects, a few new customers…

New projects that I completed this year include…

DCUK:
I continued to update the website, take the product photography, and design the e-shots, and embarked on a complete rebrand which will be launched in the next few months… Below are a few of my favourite shots from last year, and a few of the choice e-mails, which I updated the look and format of during 2012.

BLISS HAIR AND BEAUTY SALON:
As well as some photography sessions with the girls at different events, I have been keeping their blog and facebook page updated and I have been working on some print work throughout the year.

DEVON CARERS:
I collaborated with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design to work on the new re-brand of Devon Carers Link. They were renaming and rebranding the whole organisation, as well as changing the structure and idea behind the brand. We worked together on the identity and branding, marketing materials, emails, websites, newsletters, posters and more. My first major collaboration – which was fun and really nice to have someone else to bounce ideas off.

We also worked on 2 sub-brands within Devon Carers – Devon Young Carers and Devon Carers Voice – developing a website for both… but more about that at a later date…

CRABSTITCH:
I designed this logo for a friend of mine who was starting an embroidery business in the summer…

IMPULSIVE YACHT RACING:

DAISY CREMATION URNS:
Throughout the year I have been working on the Daisy Cremation Urns website and brochure, and we relaunched the new website towards the end of last year. I spent a lot of time learning about coding and opencart to get this website right…

ARGAN VIE:
I continued to tweak the branding, and design packaging for Essential Oils Direct’s line of Argan Oil products – Argan Vie:

FLAVEL:
Another job in collaboration with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design – this was a fun job updating the design and information for 2013’s Comedy Festival Leaflet and posters. The templates were similar to the previous year, and we tweaked the design with the new information. (More about this in a future blog post…)

I worked on a personal project based on the Reading Challenge I had set myself the year before, to read 30 books:

Book Review Reading Challenge

Information Design on the books I read in 2011.

I entered a competition to design characters for an alphabet, called “What’s Your Type” by “Oh Momma”, and one of my letters won…

I entered and was shortlisted for the South Devon Business Excellence Awards “Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award”:

And I read and reviewed four different Art and Design books, both for this blog and my other Book Review blog, Information is Beautiful, Graphic Design: A Concise History, How to Design Websites and Creative Inc.

…and that was just the business… in my personal life, I read 50 books, I turned 30, I dyed my hair bright red, I climbed, I sailed, I ran my first marathon and my second half marathon, I sang in a Gilbert and Sullivan musical: Mikado, I bought a boat in a syndicate, we won our first sailing series this Autumn, I watched and enjoyed the Olympics, I went to a street party for the Jubilee, I spent a week in Spain, got married, and spent three weeks in New York and driving around California! Phew! 2013 has a lot to live up too…

I have many plans for Laurapakora Design this year, so watch this space for more… first up, I will be updating my website with new work, and finalising a few projects, including a new website and branding for a False Nail Design company – Skulls and Rubys – which should be launched in the next few weeks.

Happy New Year!

Laura

New Daisy Cremation Urns Website

Not long ago, Daisy Cremation Urns swapped from Zencart to Opencart as an e-commerce solution. During this time, we decided to update the design and appearance of the site, keeping the main colours and typeface, but trying to ensure the website is clear, easy to navigate and simple to use.

We kept the blue, pale green, and grey as the main colour scheme, but toned down the use of the pale blue, darker grey and pink. We wanted to keep the site calm and serene, tasteful and classic, and also keep the products as the main focus of the site.

The banners on the home page showcase the popular products or the offers available – showing the images with a bright white background and contrasting blue text to catch the eye. The banners are a slideshow, so we can show more than one banner…

The category pages for each section was designed with a simple layout and big buttons, with images that showed the urns in their best light…

Memory Stones Category

As you can see, the memory stones were taken in a garden setting to show what they would like like when surrounded by flowers, whereas the urns were taken with a plain background…

Wooden Urns Category

Each urn is then shown as big as possible on the screen, with a full description, and all the different options on one page. We hope this will make it easier for customers to browse and find the urn they want. On each page, all the navigational links are there, and always in the same place, so it should be easy for people to navigate round the site.

As well as the products, we also have instructions, a “placing the ashes” service, and a blog:

Daisy Cremation Urns Blog

Daisy Cremation Urns Blog

We are hoping the blog will serve as a source of useful information and a way of driving a little more traffic to the site. You can read some of the articles here at the blog page.

Finally, we have tried to make the checkout very simple, all on one page, rather than clicking through different pages several times, and your address only has to be inputted once if it’s the same delivery and billing address…

Checkout

Checkout

We used a opencart module: Simple Checkout by Dmitriy Kubarev to help facilitate this, and set up card payments through Sage pay, and Paypal – which enables Paypal users to miss filling out most of this form, making it even easier.

Hopefully the site is easier to use, navigate and view the products, as well as the process of actually buying the urns being a simpler process. Since the re-design, we have also added some new products, and I have worked on photographing the products and making sure all the product shots show the urns and memorials at their best:

New Work: Daisy Coffins Website

The final tweaks to the design of the Daisy Coffins site were finished last week. I have been working with ITQ9 to bring the design of this site in line with the Daisy Memories site, and to add some new features to this page to help the audience find what they need.

Daisy Coffins Home Page

We have changed the basic layout to make it similar to the Daisy Coffins, with the brand colours of pale green, blue and grey.

Coffins Page

I also photographed the coffins and used the new photos, which show the coffins at their best as well as some of the features.

Coffins Product Page

We added a gallery page with the coffins in situ…

Daisy Coffins Gallery

We also added an article section with Frequently Asked Questions about funerals, burials and coffins, which we are adding to all the time.

Daisy Coffin Article Page

The site is now easier to use, and has an added feature of “find a funeral director” so that customers can easily find where to purchase the coffins. The website is now clearer to use and fits in with the branding.

New work: Daisy Memories Website

I have been working with Devoncraft and ITQ9 over the last few months to design and build this new website for Daisy Memories. Daisy Memories and Daisy Coffins supply urns, biodegradable urns and natural eco-friendly wicker coffins.

Daisy Memories Home Page

Daisy Coffins have been going for some time now, but recently in the last year, Daisy Memories – the sister company of Daisy Coffins, have been selling urns – and the range of new materials has grown. They now sell wooden urns, ceramic urns and plinths, brass urns, silk scatter tube urns, biodegradable paper and leaf scatter tube urns,  leather urns and memory stones.

We have set up a new website to sell these urns to the public. We tried to keep some of the branding similar to the Daisy Coffins, and the logo is very similar. We kept the pale green and the dark blue, and the daisy motifs, but toned down the pink, using it purely for the header text, and used a dark grey to help emphasise the urn photographs.

Wooden Urns Category Page

We wanted to maintain a friendly and respectful feel to the site, and show these elegant urns. We kept the colours fairly muted, to keep a calm feel to the site, and tried to make the photos of the urns the main thing that your eye is drawn to.

Product Page

I took almost all of these photos in house – you can see them here on my flickr page. The website is still being tweaked to make it easy for customers to use, but is online here.

Laura
