Devon Young Carers

Devon Carers, the organisation I work with regularly have been working on a new campaign to encourage carers to have a Health and Wellbeing Check. It’s been ongoing with the Carers for a while, but the Young Carers wanted to roll out a slightly different version with their own branding…

I changed the typefaces and colours to match the DYC branding, and also made the layout a little better for younger people to read and use. The imagery on the front and back was also changed to reflect the audience a little better, and to make the whole thing a bit more positive and friendly for the younger audience.

Devon Carers Newsletters

I’ve just finished the latest Devon Carer Newsletters for this quarter. The issue has 3 editions, a Northern, Southern and Eastern version. The newsletter contains mainly county-wide news and articles, with the middle 2 pages for local news and articles, and the last page as a calendar for local events and groups.

Devon Carers Advertising

A few weeks ago I finished up some advertising work for Devon Carers. They asked me to work on a campaign to highlight their “Health and Wellbeing Checks” that are being offered for free to all carers. A lot of people don’t realise they are carers – so part of the campaign was to help people identify that they are carers.

We used stock photography of different ages and types of people to show that carers aren’t just older people. I used the existing branding to keep it consistent with the Devon Carers brand and I designed a basic ice which could be adapted to different size and shape adverts and posters:

The adverts were used in different local newspapers, magazines and other literature, and posters and flyers were printed and sent all over the county.

New Devon Carers Voice Website and Branding

A sub brand of Devon Carers – Devon Carers Voice helps carers have their say.

The branding needed to be similar to Devon Carers to tie in with the brand, but also different enough to look like a separate group. I worked with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design, who designed the logo, and from there we worked on the branding and ideas for the website.
The logo is designed to look like the RSS feed symbol, and like radio waves or sound waves, to emphasise the importance of communication within the organisation. We wanted something very simple that would fit with the existing Devon Carers branding, and that would work well with the existing colours.
Devon Carers Voice Logo

Devon Carers Voice Logo

We used the same colours from the Devon Carers branding as the main colour – Green for Devon (to tie into the Devon County Council branding – one of the partnerships), Red for Carers (as a homage to Carers UK), and then the blue for Voice (to tie in with the NHS branding – another of the partnerships), along with the logo, and used the same typefaces on the website – Bradley Hand for Devon, and Century Gothic for the other words. The typefaces used convey the friendly aspect of the brand, and help it seem approachable.

We also used a similar structure and design, to tie in to the Devon Carers branding.  The website was built on Squarespace, to enable staff to access the site and change/add content from the admin side easily. The navigation menu on the left hand side is a similar layout to the Devon Carers site, and has links back to this as well, to ensure ease of use for the carers.

Goodbye 2012 and hello 2013…

Well it’s been quite a year! A few new projects, a few new customers…

New projects that I completed this year include…

DCUK:
I continued to update the website, take the product photography, and design the e-shots, and embarked on a complete rebrand which will be launched in the next few months… Below are a few of my favourite shots from last year, and a few of the choice e-mails, which I updated the look and format of during 2012.

DEVON CARERS:
I collaborated with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design to work on the new re-brand of Devon Carers Link. They were renaming and rebranding the whole organisation, as well as changing the structure and idea behind the brand. We worked together on the identity and branding, marketing materials, emails, websites, newsletters, posters and more. My first major collaboration – which was fun and really nice to have someone else to bounce ideas off.

We also worked on 2 sub-brands within Devon Carers – Devon Young Carers and Devon Carers Voice – developing a website for both… but more about that at a later date…

DAISY CREMATION URNS:
Throughout the year I have been working on the Daisy Cremation Urns website and brochure, and we relaunched the new website towards the end of last year. I spent a lot of time learning about coding and opencart to get this website right…

I worked on a personal project based on the Reading Challenge I had set myself the year before, to read 30 books:

Book Review Reading Challenge

Information Design on the books I read in 2011.

I entered a competition to design characters for an alphabet, called “What’s Your Type” by “Oh Momma”, and one of my letters won…

I entered and was shortlisted for the South Devon Business Excellence Awards “Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award”:

And I read and reviewed four different Art and Design books, both for this blog and my other Book Review blog, Information is Beautiful, Graphic Design: A Concise History, How to Design Websites and Creative Inc.

…and that was just the business… in my personal life, I read 50 books, I turned 30, I dyed my hair bright red, I climbed, I sailed, I ran my first marathon and my second half marathon, I sang in a Gilbert and Sullivan musical: Mikado, I bought a boat in a syndicate, we won our first sailing series this Autumn, I watched and enjoyed the Olympics, I went to a street party for the Jubilee, I spent a week in Spain, got married, and spent three weeks in New York and driving around California! Phew! 2013 has a lot to live up too…

I have many plans for Laurapakora Design this year, so watch this space for more… first up, I will be updating my website with new work, and finalising a few projects, including a new website and branding for a False Nail Design company – Skulls and Rubys – which should be launched in the next few weeks.

Happy New Year!

Laura

Using the designed template from the new brand (a collaboration between myself and Colour Clear Graphic Design) I put together this Winter’s edition.

New Project – Devon Carers Website

Following on from the branding and identity work myself and Rachel from ColourClear graphic Design have done for Devon carers, I also designed and built a website for them…

Devon Carers encompasses Devon Young Carers (for carers under 18) and Devon Carers Voice – a service where carers can get involved on the issues that matter to them, so the site needs to bit split into the three different areas. We decided on a home page that has basic information on the whole service, as well as being easy to navigate to the three different areas:

Devon Carers Home Page

Devon Carers Home Page

I used the three main colours – red, blue and green, and the extra fourth colour of yellow which has been introduced for the Devon Young Carers (more on that later…). The header is an extended version of the logo, that works well in a landscape format, with the logotype, tagline and phone number. The buttons for each area of the website are made up of the logos and a coloured border, and are big and right at the top of the page – making the site easy to navigate. I have used Questrial typeface as this is similar to the Century Gothic face in appearance and also easy to read on the screen.

Devon Carers Area Home Page

Devon Carers Area Home Page

The main Devon Carers Area – designed for carers over the age of 18, is split into three main areas of navigation: Support, Information and Breaks.

Support has all the information to help the Carers find support, calendars of groups, meetings and Memory Cafes, staff profiles and information on the Health and Well-being Checks. These have been designed to be easy for the staff to update (Google Calendars) and easy for the Carers to read, well spaced easy to read text, and not too much of it, as well as easy navigation down the side of the page.

The Information pages include downloads of the newsletters in PDF format, organised by date and area, training dates and content, other downloads such as MP3’s of recordings from events and a sign up to the newsletter bulletin.

The Breaks pages have information on the different breaks and grants for time away available to carers, including forms. There are also contact forms for the three different areas of Devon Carers:

Finally, we are working on a blog site, where upcoming events, news and information can be added quickly and easily by the staff, and read by the carers…
