Goodbye 2012 and hello 2013…

Well it’s been quite a year! A few new projects, a few new customers…

New projects that I completed this year include…

DCUK:
I continued to update the website, take the product photography, and design the e-shots, and embarked on a complete rebrand which will be launched in the next few months… Below are a few of my favourite shots from last year, and a few of the choice e-mails, which I updated the look and format of during 2012.

DEVON CARERS:
I collaborated with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design to work on the new re-brand of Devon Carers Link. They were renaming and rebranding the whole organisation, as well as changing the structure and idea behind the brand. We worked together on the identity and branding, marketing materials, emails, websites, newsletters, posters and more. My first major collaboration – which was fun and really nice to have someone else to bounce ideas off.

We also worked on 2 sub-brands within Devon Carers – Devon Young Carers and Devon Carers Voice – developing a website for both… but more about that at a later date…

DAISY CREMATION URNS:
Throughout the year I have been working on the Daisy Cremation Urns website and brochure, and we relaunched the new website towards the end of last year. I spent a lot of time learning about coding and opencart to get this website right…

FLAVEL:
Another job in collaboration with Rachel from Colourclear Graphic Design – this was a fun job updating the design and information for 2013’s Comedy Festival Leaflet and posters. I worked on a personal project based on the Reading Challenge I had set myself the year before, to read 30 books:

Book Review Reading Challenge

Information Design on the books I read in 2011.

I entered a competition to design characters for an alphabet, called “What’s Your Type” by “Oh Momma”, and one of my letters won…

My winning "i"

I entered and was shortlisted for the South Devon Business Excellence Awards “Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award”:

Shortlisted for the Young Entrepreneur Award

And I read and reviewed four different Art and Design books, both for this blog and my other Book Review blog, Information is Beautiful, Graphic Design: A Concise History, How to Design Websites and Creative Inc.

…and that was just the business… in my personal life, I read 50 books, I turned 30, I dyed my hair bright red, I climbed, I sailed, I ran my first marathon and my second half marathon, I sang in a Gilbert and Sullivan musical: Mikado, I bought a boat in a syndicate, we won our first sailing series this Autumn, I watched and enjoyed the Olympics, I went to a street party for the Jubilee, I spent a week in Spain, got married, and spent three weeks in New York and driving around California! Phew! 2013 has a lot to live up too…

I have many plans for Laurapakora Design this year, so watch this space for more… first up, I will be updating my website with new work, and finalising a few projects, including a new website and branding for a False Nail Design company – Skulls and Rubys – which should be launched in the next few weeks.

Happy New Year!

Laura

Christmas Ducks…

A little early, as it’s not quite December, but here some festive work I have been working on…

The Duck Company UK released two new ducklings this year… a wooden duck dressed as Santa, and a white painted duck personalised with ribbon and painted messages. I photographed both of them, ready for the website and promotional e-shots:

I use an infinity cove made from a piece of white card inside a softbox, with two tungsten lights. The white background helps to make the ducks really stand out and shows them at their bright and colourful best!

There were hours of fun to be had with these, photographing them with the decorations and baubles, and with other ducks. I try to make the shots more interesting by adding other products or a few props, so that customers can see them in context regarding size, and also to make the website and the e-shots a bit more captivating. I got some good shots ready for the emails, which I used the normal DCUK e-shot branding, We use neutral beige and brown colours to compliment the natural wood and bamboo of the ducks, and also to enhance the vivid and bright colours of the painted products.

The emails go out to our database of customers, and the images and a brief message with a link to the site goes out to the Facebook page. After the success of the Diamond Jubilee duckling (who sold out 100 in 2 days) we weren’t sure how successful this would be… The Santa ducklings sold out within 3 days of the email going out, the Christmas ducklings are still in stock… but only just! The e-shots and the Facebook posts seem to be working well to get new products out and seen by potential customers.

If you want to order one, or see more ducks, head over to the website: www.theduckcompany.co.uk.

We’re hoping to have a bit of a re-brand for the ducks in the New Year, so this is probably the last you’ll see of the natural beige and brown, and Akzidenz Grotesk… keep your eyes peeled for more on that next year. For now though, you can see the existing site and some of my product photography here, and more of the e-shots that I have designed for The Duck Company UK here on my website.

New Updated DCUK Work

It’s been a busy couple of months at the Duck Company HQ in Totnes, and we’ve been working on new e-mail newsletters to let the customers know of all the new arrivals!

Mother’s Day email with the new design

We have redesigned the e-shots, using more white space. We have also designed these e-shots so that you can scroll down and see more, utilising the fact that it’s on a screen a lot more. The area above the fold should be enough to draw people in, and make them want to scroll down, and then click on the email links to go direct to the website to find out more.

The Duck Company UK has q loyal following of fans and customers, and the e-shots should hopefully provide them with information on new ducks, special offers and perfect seasonal gifts from the website.

2012 Easter e-shot

Thank you teacher

I have kept the original brand colours, and the style of the photography, but made the designs cleaner and more simple. This makes the images more eyecatching, and I kept the amount of text to a minimum, using different weights, colours and sizes to make different messages stand out.

Diamond Jubilee Ducklings

The e-shots seem to be working well, the Diamond Jubilee e-shot, combined with a brief message on Facebook caused the entire stock of limited edition ducklings to sell out in 4 hours.

Most of the e-shots are designed for a UK audience and then again for a US audience as DCUK have customers on both sides of the pond.

White Jubilee Duckling Email

We have used the e-shots for the trade customers as well, in particular, to advertise Trade Fairs and new stock.

Easter Trade Email

If you like the look of the ducks, and want to find out more, visit the Duck Company UK site here.

New Work: DCUK Website

I have been working with Devoncraft and ITQ9 for a while now on the new DCUK website. The previous website had grown with many new products, and it needed to be updated with the new brand colours and typography as well as trying to fit navigation to all the products above the fold.

Old DCUK Home Page

As you can see the navigation on the left hand side had grown so big it carried on down the page so that the user had to scroll to find all the different sections. We kept the colours, the pale beige and the brown, and updated the navigation to try and fit it all above the fold and on every page.

New DCUK Home Page

Along the top, the home banner is a slideshow of the welly ducks – not only does the style work well for this size and shape photo, these ducks are also the bestsellers. The photos were all retaken (by me) and use a white background as this not only works well against the neutral brand colours but also shows off the ducks at their best.

DCUK Gift Ideas Page

I designed the look of the site and worked in collaboration with ITQ9 to get the site up and running. We kept the type big and simple, and kept the text to a minimum where possible to ensure that the site is easy and pleasant to use.

Welly Ducklet

We tried to make it as easy as possible to order each product with the relevant choices and extras – we wanted to keep it similar to the previous site so we didn’t lose any customers, but make it better to use. I was then also able to tie in the new branding for the website into the print work and email newsletters:

Christmas E-shot

It’s still a work in progress but it’s looking a lot better! You can see more of the DCUK print work and e-shots on my website here. You can also visit the DCUK website at: www.theduckcompany.co.uk.
