Christmas Crayola Colour Chaos

Last Christmas, waiting for me under the tree was a small heavy square box. It wasn’t small enough to be jewellery, it wasn’t big enough to be a car, so I opened it up and found:

277 Crayola crayons in various different colours.

Why? It started with The Mighty Boosh where they end an episode with Walt Disney ringing and asking them to put all his felt tip pens in colour order. I, like Howard Moon and Vince Noir, can think of no better way to spend an afternoon.

When I explained this to my beloved, he was understandably worried but put it to the back of his mind.

A few months later I happened upon a blog post about crayola crayons.  I started thinking about my childhood and how every year for Christmas without fail, good old saint nick would bring the latest crayola art offering. I had it all, crayons, metallic crayons, fluorescent crayons, pens with thick and thin tips, washable pens, magic pens, pencils, poster paints, watercolour paints, you name it, I had it. And thus my love of art and design began.

He found me looking wistfully at photos of crayons and lo and behold, this year, Saint Nick graciously provided.

After several courses of Christmas lunch, a small snooze and Dr Who, I set about the joyous task of putting them in order. Armed with festive podcasts and chocolate, I started.

I know you aren’t interested but I’m going to talk you through my process anyway… I put all the crayons into groups of colours:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Turquoise
Blue
Purple
Brown
Grey
Metallic
Fluorescent

The next problem was what order to put them in? The obvious is red – orange – yellow – green – turquoise – blue – purple, but then where does brown go? Do you include the metallics and fluorescents or do they go at the end in their own seperate box? What about black, white and grey? I decided to go with:
Red – brown – orange – yellow – green – turquoise – blue – purple – black – grey -white – metallic silver, copper, bronze, gold – fluorescent pink, orange, yellow, green.

Not only was I completely satisfied that all was right with the world now that my crayons were in order but I also found some fab names of colours:

I don’t care if you think I’m weird. I love my crayons, especially now they’re in order. And if you’re really lucky, I’ll post some crayola artwork (if I can ever bring myself to use them!)
